Earlier today, I joined my colleague the Honorable Rodneyse Bichotte, State Committeewoman/District Leader - 42nd A.D., elected officials, community leaders and members of the Haitian community in the 57th A.D. and beyond at a press conference to denounce comments made by HOT 97 DJ, Cipha Sounds (Luis Diaz). On Friday morning, Mr. Diaz stated on the air,"The reason I'm HIV-negative is because I don't mess with Haitian girls." Such statements cannot be tolerated and possess no humor. We must continue to stand in solidarity with the Haitian community especially after all that has occurred in Haiti over the past year. Click on the link below for an article in today's Daily News on the matter.
Also, there will be a meeting on the situation tomorrow at 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, 310 W. 43rd St., NYC at 6pm.
- For those of you who missed the Stars of New York Dance, held at the Marriott New York at the Brooklyn Bridge on Thursday, December 16, 2010, click on the link below for highlights of the event and of course to see folks who you know perform to benefit at-risk youth.
- Yesterday evening, I joined members of the Quincy Street Block Association in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of the 57th A.D. The block is still reeling from the effects of the tornado storm several months ago. Please note that the Office of New York City Comptroller John Liu is currently working with residents to resolve such complaints. For more information or if you wish to register a complaint, you may contact Mr. Asher Novek at 212.669.3303 or the Community Action Center at 212.669.3908.
- Finally, I'm pleased to inform you that I have been invited to participate in a working group comprised of parents, community leaders, clergy, education advocates and organizations who will meet on a quarterly basis with Michael Mulgrew, President of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) to discuss and develop action plans in response to issues in our New York City Public School System. As a proud product of the New York City Public System, I am truly excited. Our next meeting is in March and I look forward to sharing with you at that time.
ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS!
