EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SERVICES COMMITTEE

FROM FAR AND NEAR

What a turnout, on Saturday October 29th more than 75 eager participants came out to complete the first on site OSHA training and certification class. OSHA standards are rules that describe the methods that employers must use to protect their employees from hazards. There are OSHA standards for Construction work, Maritime operations, and General Industry, which is the set that applies to most worksites. These standards limit the amount of hazardous chemicals workers can be exposed to, require the use of certain safe practices and equipment, and require employers to monitor hazards and keep records of workplace injuries and illnesses. Examples of OSHA standards include requirements to: provide fall protection, prevent trenching cave ins, prevent infectious diseases, assure that workers safely enter confined spaces, prevent exposure to harmful substances like asbestos, put guards on machines, provide respirators or other safety equipment, and provide training for certain dangerous jobs. Within the next 5 to 10 years all employees will be required to have a basic OSHA certification before hire.

The LG Resident Association "RESIDENT UNIVERSITY" program in conjunction with the Public Housing Corporation was able to offer the certification for free to NYCHA and non public housing candidates alike for FREE. Men women of all ages and walks of life came out in full force to complete the training. In total 91 applicants came. 20 were not eligible to complete Saturdays class and will rescheduled for a later class. 75 students started the class with 74 successfully completing the requirements for certification.

We are currently recruiting persons interested in enrolling in the January 2011 class. Candidates must be at least 17 years of age, in good physical health with a clean appearance. If interested, candidates may contact the Resident Center for more information.
