BLACK HISTORY MONTH ACTIVITIES

"TALES FROM THE LAND OF GULLAH"
Black History Month Fever shined brightly through the cold on Saturday. The Brooklyn Children's Museum in cooperation with Congressman Ed Towns and our Community Center Advisory Committee hosted Lafayette Gardens for a special Black History Month exhibit "Tales from the Land of Gullah".
An exciting day it was. Residents of all ages spent the day at the museum enjoying many things like Hissing Cock Roaches, Giant Iguanas and a Burmese Python larger than most of the children who stood in awe of the beautiful constrictor. The youngest children and our president loved playing in the sand box and the toy room. The museum was a great family activity as parents read books, chatted and played with many of the exciting activities. Children were encouraged to run all over the place and explore any and everything. We enjoyed a special class about the "Gullah" people, slaves from West Africa who settled on tiny islands off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina. The young people learned that Gullah believe straight lines carry "bad luck" so they always design artwork and handicrafts with curved or slanted lines. They discussed the tradition of Kente Cloth Weaving and it's importance. Each child made their own Quilt panel before enjoying a healthy lunch before the journey back to Clinton Hills The trip was a huge success and the museum was exceptionally adult and kid friendly. Very clean and child safe. We want to thank all of the people who helped make this trip happen!
