The decline in union membership and the rise in layoffs, outsourcing, the attack on workers' rights and strikes have resulted in major challenges for the Union movement.Crain's gives a very good overview of the situation in New York City so please take a moment to read about it here.

- The West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA) is embarking on a new initiative that will positively impact the future of Labor Day Carnival and the Community.This year, on Labor Day Sunday, September 4, 2011 from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm, WIADCA will be hosting one of the largest Gospel celebrations in Brooklyn. It will be held behind the Brooklyn Museum at 200 Eastern Parkway and will feature local Gospel Artists and Choirs from various Churches. Music Directors and their choirs are welcome to sign up and be a part of this great event. The Deadline to enter is Wednesday August 31st 2011. Donations are accepted and will be used to help two organizations with their cause against violence towards the youth - The James E. Davis Foundation & The Leiby Kletzky Memorial Fund. ***This past Friday, I joined President Carmen Charles of Local 420, DC-37, AFSCME, at a Caribbean Heritage Pre-Labor Day event. The event is held annually to raise funds to assist DC-37 members in paying the $680.00 application fee to become United States citizens. Many are hardworking individuals who work in the healthcare field, especially the municipal hospitals and some live in the 57th Assembly District, but are unable to afford the fee and have expressed a strong desire to become citizens and obtain the "American dream."
