EYE ON THE COMMUNITY WITH "OLA"

EMPOWERMENT AND PROGRESS

- EDUCATION
Earlier today, I participated in a press conference held on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall sponsored by the Honorable Chris Owens, State Committeeman/District Leader - 52nd A.D. The purpose of the event was to protest the nomination of Ms. Cathie Black as the next Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education. As you know, the Dept. of Education is responsible for the education of 1.1 million students in the New York City Public School system. Public reports indicate that Ms. Black has no experience and limited qualifications necessary to become the next Chancellor and therefore requires a waiver from N.Y.S. Education Commissioner David Steiner to serve. Now more than ever, it's crucial that we have a Chancellor who not only has the qualifications and experience to reform a public school system that is plagued with high drop out rates, low test scores and graduation rates. As a proud product of the New York City public education system, I strongly encourage you to read and support the on-line petition on the matter. Click on the link below for more info.
- Join State Committeewoman/District Leader Olanike Alabi, District Council 37, Prospect Heights Democrats for Reform and the 57th A.D. Democratic Organization for the 2nd ANNUAL Community FOOD DRIVE. Bring your non-perishable/canned goods and come out and enjoy some music, great food and entertainment. All of the food collected will be donated to food pantries sponsored by the Child Development Support Corporation (CDSC) and Full Gospel Assembly Church. Both pantries are located in the 57th Assembly District.

- TRANSPORTATION
Several of you have reached out to me regarding the restoration of the B25 bus stop at Cambridge Pl. and Fulton St. Please note that last year, I wrote a letter to the New York City Dept. of Transportation (DOT) requesting that the stop be restored primarily because so many seniors in our community have been inconvenienced. The Dept. denied my initial request and I'm in the process of revisiting the issue due to the high volume of calls. In a very short period of time, I hope to have a response back from DOT. Click on the link below to read the New York Times blog article on the matter.
