"AN EXERCISE IN EXCELLENCE"
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. KING!

This past Monday we celebrated a remarkable and powerful leader and pioneer in Civil Rights and Humanity Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

It was a beautiful and powerful day that took us to an Art Exhibit of Dr. King and his life at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The artists were our very own youth of Lafayette Gardens. Thanks to the special work of Denise Guess, our Center Director and Eric Cunmberbunch, Special Projects Director for NYCHA our young people were fantastic and their art was viewed by hundreds attending the festivities. Our very special thanks to Mrs. Lotewonie and Mr. Cey of Brooklyn Academy of Music for selecting and working our youth for the exhibition. Of course our own Denise Guess is amazing and pulled another fabulous activity all together for our youth.
Congratulations to all of youth artists and a job very well done!!

Following the breakfast and exhibit, the tribute and show was extraordinary and historic. Citywide leaders such as John Liu and Mayor Bloomberg made presentations as well as all of our locally elected officials. The C.O.G.I.C. Institutional Choir brought the house down all morning with several stirring selections.
After a quick lunch at Mc Donalds, we headed over to Long Island University for Community Day. Everyone, the youth and parents had a great time during the game and the basketball clinic that followed. In addition to all the skills tips and pointers the youth received from the players, they received posters, player autographs and free basketballs. It was nice end to a long and beautiful day!
