"COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT"

One of the newest columns to debut on our site is the "Community Spotlight" when we take time to introduce the movers and shakers, the back bones of the community!

In our inaugural spotlight we are proud to introduce Olanike "OLA" Alabi.

Ola is the two-term incumbent Democratic Female District leader in the 57th Assembly District (The district where the Honorable Hakeem Jeffries is the Assembly Member). She is the assistant to George Gresham, president of 1199 S.E.I.U., the powerful union that represents hospital workers. Active in the community, she routinely hosts community forums and sends out greetings and publicizes community news and updates via e-mail blasts.

Ola sat with us recently and chatted about her and her duties:

Ola! Can you explain to our neighbors, exactly what it is you do?

As a State Committee Member and District Leader, I am one of your local community organizers. District Leaders are not only the vanguard of political parties, but we also staff your local polling sites in conjunction with the NYC Board of Elections and perform the nuts and bolts of assisting candidates in getting elected to office. We address constituent complaints and work with community leaders and legislators to improve the quality of life in our districts

Why do you do this?

I have always had a strong desire to improve and have a positive impact on the lives of others. Public service became the vehicle I chose to do so.

What is one of the most challenging aspects of the job?

Working with others who possess agendas and ulterior motives which don't necessarily benefit the individuals I was elected to serve.

What is one of the most important achievements you hope to achieve while doing the job?

To provide the necessary information and assistance to those who are in the most need!
