WHAT'S BLOOMING IN THE 57TH?

Olanike Alabi

- GREAT NEWS! You may recall a recent site visit I informed you about not too long ago in Clinton Hill which I participated in regarding the B25/B26 bus stop. I am pleased to inform you that it has been mutually agreed by the New York City Transit and the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) that the B25 & B26 will now stop directly across from the Grace Agard Harewood (Fort Greene Senior) Center to accommodate so many who were inconvenienced. The paperwork is currently being processed and special thanks to so many of you who made this a reality.

- Join President Norman Seabrook and the Correction Officers Benevolent Association (COBA) for a rally in support of working families and middle class New Yorkers to take a stand and oppose Mayor Bloomberg's plan to destroy pension benefits and collective bargaining rights.

***Earlier this week, I joined parents, community advocates, legislators and the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) - the parent organization of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) for a budget rally at the State Capitol in Albany, New York. The rally was held to call as much attention as possible to the proposed budget cuts to public education. As a product of the New York City public school system, it's clear that our public schools are at a major crossroads and are experiencing major challenges. I will continue to stand in solidarity with so many against the proposed cuts, recognizing that President Obama was absolutely right when he stated last week "...any budget that sacrifices a commitment to education is a budget that sacrifices our future."

Congratulations to Rev. Dr. David Hampton, Pastor of Bethany Baptist Church on the celebration of his 3rd Pastoral Anniversary. Although Bethany is in the 56th A.D., several members who attend the church are residents of the 57th A.D.

***This past weekend, I attended an Open House event at Anchor House located in Crown Heights. Anchor House is a faith based residential drug treatment facility for men and women, and has been in Brooklyn for nearly 50 years. I share this with you because although their facilities are located in the 56th and 43rd Assembly Districts, they are in close proximity to the 57th A.D. and residents from our district have benefited from their programs. My hope is that we will continue to lobby our legislators to support programs such as Anchor House.
