Adult Education and Child College Programs

The Resident University, Adult Education and Child College Programs invites you to, enhance your life, family and relationships, by participating any one or all of our FREE education and training classes this summer! There is a wide range of programs being offered for children, adults and teens.

The classes are free and only require you to register and be on time. Most of the classes are open to anyone from the Lafayette Gardens Development AND Community. Others are offered exclusively to Lafayette Garden Residents. Please feel free to stop by the Resident Center on the ground floor of 415 Lafayette Avenue or call the center at 347 587 6443.

FINANCIAL EDUCATION CLASSES
Adult Education and Child College
Finally an opportunity to understand to learn all about credit, banks and accounts. The Staff of Credit, Where Credit is Due is teaching a five week course on the basics and essentials of "Your Personal Finance and Credit". All participants receive a copy of their credit report as a part of the class. The class is open to everyone 16 years and older. The FEC will meet every Tuesday evening, beginning June 8th, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM for five weeks. Everyone who completes the five sessions will receive a free bank account. Only 16 spots are available.


MY NATIONS CAPITOL
Child College Learning Adventure and Tour
Students ages 5 to 13 years of age are invited to join us for an Adventure to Washington, D.C. to experience a day with the Congressional staff of Ed Towns. We will continue our studies of our Federal government and tour the U.S. Capitol, Washington Mall and the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Everyone will enjoy an All You Can Eat Buffet before returning home to Brooklyn. The trip is open to all members of the development and community on a first come sign up registration. The trip is limited to 55 people.


SONY WONDER TECHNOLOGY LAB
Child College Learning Adventure
Students ages 7 to 19 years of age are invited to join us for a day of learning and exploring the world of technology hands on as seen through the adventure and eyes of Sony technology. Students will experience giant and tiny computers, a working television studio and robots of all sizes. Students who have completed or are taking the Computer Classes will be considered for registration first after which the trip is open to all members of the development and community on a first come sign up registration. The trip is July 2, 2010 from noon to 4:00 PM and is limited to 40 people.


ORGANICS AND FARM FRESH
Child College
Join the Teen Tyme and Handsome Moneymaker Teen Groups as they explore, study and practice Organic Foods, Production and Marketing in partnership with "GROW NYC". Winner of the EPA's 2010 Environmental Quality Award, GrowNYC is a hands-on non-profit which improves New York City’s quality of life through environmental programs that transform communities block by block and empower all New Yorkers to secure a clean and healthy environment for future generations. Our teens operate an Organic Fruit and Vegetable stand in the community. The teens are learning and practicing their entrepreneurial skills and directly contributing to the community. Hours and times of the Summer Market will be posted and announced very soon. Teens are employed at the market based upon their participation and completion of the Youth Association Membership Requirements.


OSHA 10
Resident University
The OSHA 10 Hour Outreach Training Programs were developed by the OSHA Training Institute with the intent to assist employers in training and introducing employees to the basic practices of identifying, reducing, eliminating and reporting hazards associated with their work. This is the 10-hour course for construction or general industry. If you successfully complete the class, you will receive obtain your DOL Completion card. This is a one day certification class, open to anyone in the LG Community and Development, ages 16 and older with proper identification. The class is offered in cooperation with the WYCKOFF GARDENS ASSOCIATION, PUBLIC HOUSING COMMUNITIES and GENESUS ONE ENTERPRISE. The June Class is filled. We are registering for the July and August Classes.


SECURITY GUARD CERTIFICATION
Resident University
All Security Guards are required to complete an 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course prior to applying to the Department of State for a Security Guard Registration Card. We will pay all fees associated with securing your license. Participants must be 18 years of age and older also LEGALLY be on a NYCHA lease. The class is offered in cooperation with the WYCKOFF GARDENS ASSOCIATION AND NATURES FINEST SECURITY. The June Class is filled. We are registering for the July and August Classes


SOCIAL MEDIA AND NETWORKING

Resident University and Child College
This is an advanced class for those who are computer literate but want to learn more specifically about the Social Media Movement. Are you interested in "What Social Media is", how is it different from 'Social Networking" what are the do's and don'ts of the Social Media and Networking World? This is the seminar for you offered by IGOTITTOO Digital Technology for one day only. Participants must be 15 years old or older, have basic computer literacy and a laptop is requested but not required. Participation is open to all members of the Development and Community. The seminar is June 19th from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM.
IGOTITTOO Digital Technology also offers free computer classes for children, adults and seniors several times during the week in two locations, our Community Center and Resident Association Center. They conduct a free Computer Repair Clinic once per season. The Summer Repair Clinic is scheduled for July. If you have a computer in need repair or a tune up contact TY in Our Resident Center or call 347 587 6443 evenings. The services are all "FREE of Service"
