"PREVENTING BED BUGS"

During the general meeting a number of residents inquired about the growing number of bedbug compalints.
The NYCHA poicy regarding "BED BUGS" requires residents to call the centralized call center and file a complaint. Once you receive your "ticket number" you MUST CALL Margie Perez in the Brooklyn Borough Office to schedule an appointment for a special team of exterminators to come out and resolve the problem.
Some residents have asked about simple procedures they can follow on their own behalf. We contcted th DOh for some simple tips and easy do it yourself steps.
WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU CONTACT NYCHA AND ALLOW THEM TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE!
Simple and Easy Steps to Prevent and Infestation:
Difficulty: Easy
InstructionsThings You'll Need:

Step 1)   The first step you need to take is to go to your local dollar store and buy a few things that you will need.

The first thing you should buy are plastic drop clothes you would use as if you were painting to cover your mattresses and furniture.
The second thing you need to buy is tape (i use packaging tape because it's strong and it sticks to the plastic very well.)
The next thing you will need to buy is 2 or 3 bottles of rubbing alcohol and a container of boric acid.
All of these item would probably cost less than $10 dollars.
Step 2)   Whether or not you have seen bed bugs in your home, but you suspect someone that has been in your home may have been in contact with bed bugs, following these steps will kill or prevent bed bugs from invading your home.
The first thing you need to do is apply a perimeter of boric acid around all base boards of your home, including any holes or cracks visible.
Boric acid should be used with extreme caution because it can be harmful if not used properly.
Step 3)   The next thing that you should do is pour the bottles of alcohol into an empty spray bottle.
Spray all furniture and bedding until very damp, making sure you spray in all seams, folds and bottom of furniture and bedding. (alcohol kills bed bugs instantly).
Step 4)   Next, You need to cover your furniture and mattresses completely with the plastic drop clothes using the tape to seal it all up making sure no part of the mattresses or furniture are exposed.
You can use a sheet or furniture covers to hide the plasic. Keep the plasic on your mattresses and furniture for at least 6 months or longer. If you discover a rip or tear in the plasic, make sure you tape over it as soon as you see it.
About once or twice a month, use more alcohol and spray your bedding, furniture and anywhere you suspect bed bugs may be. (rubbing alcohol is totally harmless so it can be sprayed anywhere including clothes, curtins, carpet, etc.)
